Rather than being a throwaway low-value unit, in PoE2 the Chaos Orb is a precision tool that experienced crafters use deliberately.

A Chaos Orb removes a random modifier from a Rare item and augments it with a new random modifier. You right-click the orb, then left-click a Rare item, and one of its affixes is swapped for a different random one. The net effect is that it rerolls a single modifier at a time while leaving the rest of the item intact.
