What is Currency in Path of Exile 2?

In Path of Exile 2, currency items are both money and crafting tools. Unlike traditional RPGs with gold coins, every currency orb in POE2 has a specific use — from modifying items to rerolling maps. This dual purpose is what makes the POE2 economy so dynamic.

Currency items drop from monsters, chests, and league mechanics throughout the game. They can be traded between players via the official trade site at pathofexile.com/trade2, or exchanged for items in bulk.

The value of each currency is determined entirely by supply and demand — how many drop, how many players need them for crafting, and how useful they are in the current meta. Prices shift significantly between leagues and even within a single league as the economy matures.

The POE2 Currency Hierarchy

POE2 has a three-tier currency system that most players use as a mental model for value:

Tier 1 — Divine Orb

The primary trading currency. Most high-value items are priced in Divine Orbs (abbreviated “div”). Used in crafting to reroll the values of explicit modifiers on rare items to new random values. Worth approximately 150–350 Chaos Orbs depending on the league stage.

Tier 2 — Exalted Orb

A crafting currency used to add a new random modifier to a rare item. Worth roughly 10–20 Chaos Orbs. Not the main trading unit, but frequently traded in bulk for other currencies.

Tier 3 — Chaos Orb

The baseline unit. Chaos Orbs reroll all modifiers on a rare item simultaneously. Extremely common — worth 1 Chaos (by definition). Used as the reference unit for pricing lower-value items and currencies.

How Currency Trading Works in POE2

Trading in POE2 is player-to-player. There is no auction house — you list items on the trade site and other players whisper you to buy. Here's how the currency trading flow works:

  1. List your currency on the official trade site (pathofexile.com/trade2) using the Currency Exchange tab.
  2. Set your rate — for example, “I want 14 Chaos for 1 Exalted Orb.” Players whose offer matches yours will get an automatic trade whisper.
  3. Accept the trade request in-game. A trade window opens — verify both sides before confirming.
  4. Bulk trading is faster. Buyers prefer to trade 50+ units at once — so listing in larger quantities gets faster sales.

Important: always double-check the quantities in the trade window before accepting. Scams exist — the most common is replacing a Divine Orb with an Orb of Alteration in the trade window at the last second.

How to Flip Currency for Profit in POE2

Currency flipping is the practice of buying a currency type at a lower rate and selling it at a higher rate. The gap between the buy and sell rate is your profit. Here's how to do it:

Step 1 — Find a profitable pair

Use the Exiled Tools flip finder to see currency pairs with positive ROI. Look for pairs with high liquidity (lots of active listings on both sides) and at least a 5–10% margin.

Step 2 — Buy at the low rate

On the trade site Currency Exchange, set your listing to buy the target currency at a slightly lower rate than current market. Patient buyers can often get 5–15% below market if they wait.

Step 3 — Relist at market rate

List the currency you just bought at the current market rate. The difference between your buy price and sell price is your profit per unit — multiply by volume for total returns.

Key rule: Only flip currencies with high listing counts on both sides. Flipping illiquid currencies ties up your capital and can result in losses if the price moves against you while you hold.
