How Trading Works in Path of Exile 2

Path of Exile 2 uses a peer-to-peer trading system — there is no auction house. You list items on the official trade site, interested buyers send you a whisper (auto-generated by the site), and you complete the trade in-game by opening a trade window.

This system is intentional: GGG keeps trade friction moderate to prevent the economy from being dominated entirely by bots and market flippers. As a result, being online and responsive is a real trading advantage.

Two ways to trade
  • Item trading — list individual items (gear, unique items, etc.) via the main trade site search.
  • Currency trading — bulk-trade currency stacks via the dedicated Currency Exchange tab.

The official trade site is at pathofexile.com/trade2. There is no third-party site that replaces it — all serious trading happens through this interface.

Using the POE2 Trade Site

The trade site is a searchable database of every item players have listed for sale. Here's how to use it effectively:

Searching for an item to buy
1
Choose the right category
Select the item type from the dropdown (Weapons, Armour, Accessories, etc.) or search by name for unique items. For currency, use the Currency Exchange tab instead.
2
Set your filters
Add stat filters for the mods you care about — e.g. “+% Fire Damage” with a minimum value. Use the item level filter if you need a craftable base.
3
Sort by price ascending
Always sort by price ascending. The cheapest listings at the top reveal the true market floor. Ignore the first 1–2 if they look like outliers (underpriced mistakes or bait).
4
Check seller status
The trade site shows whether a seller is online, AFK, or DND. Only whisper online sellers — AFK sellers waste your time and skew the displayed price floor.
5
Send the whisper
Click the clipboard icon next to a listing to copy the whisper message. Paste it into the in-game chat. The buyer will invite you to a party and open a trade window.
Key trade site filter fields
iLvlItem level — minimum 83 for the highest tier mods on most gear slots.
QualityFilter for quality percentage — useful for weapons and flasks.
CorruptedToggle whether the item is corrupted — corrupted items can't be modified further.
SocketsFilter for number of sockets — critical for skill gem builds.
LinkedNumber of linked sockets — important for support gem setups.
SellerSearch by seller account name — useful for buying from a specific player.
Note: The “Online Only” filter is your best friend. Enabling it hides AFK and offline sellers, showing you only realistic prices from players who can complete the trade now.

How to Price Your Items in POE2

Pricing items correctly is one of the most valuable skills in POE2 trading. Price too high and your item sits for days; price too low and you leave currency on the table.

The 5–10 listing method

Search the trade site for your item type with similar mods. Sort by price ascending. The cheapest 5–10 listings from online sellersdefine your realistic price range. Set your price at or slightly below the median of that range to sell quickly, or 5–10% above it if you're willing to wait.

Unique items

Unique items are simpler — search by name and look at the current listings. Corrupted uniques with a desirable implicit are worth significantly more than their non-corrupted counterparts. Always check both separately.

Currency and splinters

For currency, don't use item search — use the Currency Exchange tab or check the Exiled Tools currency tracker for live poe.ninja rates updated hourly.

Warning: Ignore the first 1–3 listings if they look dramatically cheaper than the rest. These are often “price fixers” — players listing at artificially low prices they never intend to sell at, to mislead buyers about market value.

Listing your items: You need a premium stash tab to list items via right-click. Without one, you can type a price note directly into the item note field in-game. Premium tabs make listing significantly faster and are recommended if you trade regularly.

Bulk Currency Exchange in POE2

The Currency Exchange tab on the trade site is designed for trading currency in bulk. It works differently from the item search:

How it works
  1. Select the currency you want to receive (e.g. Divine Orb) and the currency you're paying with (e.g. Chaos Orb).
  2. The exchange tab shows all open offers, sorted by rate. Each listing shows the rate and the seller's available stock.
  3. Click an offer to auto-generate the trade whisper. The seller will invite you and the trade window opens with the agreed quantities pre-suggested.
  4. Always verify both sides of the trade window before accepting. The listed quantities must match.
Listing your own currency

To list currency for sale, go to your Currency stash tab, right-click a currency stack, and set your price. Example: “1 Divine Orb for 200 Chaos Orbs.” Your listing appears in the exchange and buyers whisper you automatically.

Tip: Bulk traders prefer large quantities — listing 200+ Chaos at once gets faster responses than listing 10 at a time. The trade site shows your total stock, so buyers know you can fill their full order.

Trade Etiquette & Safety in POE2

POE2 trading has informal rules that keep interactions smooth. Breaking them makes you harder to trade with and can damage your reputation on the trade site.

Respond quickly or stay AFK
If you're listing items, be online to complete trades. If you're stepping away, set your status to AFK so buyers know to skip you.
Verify the trade window before accepting
Always check both sides of the trade window match what was agreed. The most common scam is swapping a Divine Orb with a lower-value currency at the last second.
Invite the buyer to party first
When a buyer whispers you, invite them to your party immediately. Don't make them wait — they may be shopping multiple listings at once.
Don't waste buyers' time
If you invite someone to party and don't open the trade within 30–60 seconds, they will (and should) leave. Be in your hideout and ready before inviting.
Don't leave items listed when sold
If an item sells or you decide to keep it, remove the listing immediately. Listing items you won't sell wastes everyone's time and inflates the price floor artificially.
Note: The trade site has a “last active” indicator. Sellers who haven't been active in hours have likely logged out with their items still listed — you can skip them safely.

Currency Flipping — Finding Profitable Opportunities

Currency flipping is the act of buying a currency type at a lower rate than you sell it, profiting from the bid-ask spread. It requires no kills, no maps — just capital and time.

Example flip
→ The trade site shows Exalted Orbs being bought at 15 Chaos each (bulk buyers)
→ The trade site shows Exalted Orbs being sold at 13 Chaos each (impatient sellers)
→ You buy 100 Exalted Orbs for 1,300 Chaos, relist them at 14 Chaos each
→ Sell all 100 = 1,400 Chaos — 100 Chaos profit on zero risk if liquidity holds

The key to profitable flipping is liquidity— only flip currencies where both the buy side and sell side have many active listings. Illiquid pairs can leave you holding currency you can't sell at the price you expected.

Best flip opportunities now

The Exiled Tools currency flip finder ranks current POE2 flip opportunities by ROI and volume — updated every hour from live trade data. It shows the spread, liquidity score, and estimated profit per 100-unit flip.

What makes a good flip target?
  • At least 50+ active listings on both buy and sell sides
  • A consistent spread of 5–15% between buy and sell rate
  • Price stability over the last 24–48 hours (not in a crash)
  • Currencies with organic demand — used in crafting or league mechanics
Warning: Avoid flipping currencies that are heavily farmed by league mechanics — their prices tend to crash mid-league as supply floods the market. Always check the 7-day price trend before committing capital to a flip.
